“Here are a few ideas on how to use space more efficiently.
- Create spaces for small, impromptu meetings of four or five people.
- Add common areas to promote spontaneous conversation between employees. Common areas may include office machines and a small coffee bar.
- Side chairs in manager offices often are not used. Removing these chairs or relocating them to common areas uses space better. Try using small meeting rooms for private meetings instead.
- To avoid that "rat-packed" feeling found in many cubicles, vary the height of walls. Walls on common corridors often work well at shorter heights.
- If space allows, provide some "hotel" space that quickly can be converted for a visiting employee or used as a small meeting room. All that's needed is some basic furniture, a place to plug in a laptop computer and perhaps a board for brainstorming.
- Consider storage needs. Assess needs individually instead of using a blanket approach. Also, take into account storage needs not only for paper files, but also for CDs and diskettes. For paper documents, determine what is disposable or what could be archived to save space.”
