Study Six:
COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES
Walter B. Ford II Building; Ferry Street Administration Building
Detroit, Michigan
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In September, 2001, the College For Creative Studies (CCS) opened two new facilities for their Fall semester: the 102,000 SF Walter B. Ford II Building, a state-of-the-art classroom building, and a 19,000 SF adaptive renovation of two historic Ferry Street residences for administrative use.
Over a 90-day period, P2M interviewed staff, planned and executed primary moves of ten departments and over 200 staff from four existing campus buildings into the new facilities, as well as a series of smaller interdependent moves to backfill and reallocate the vacated space. The planning required coordination with two general contractors, CCS staff, multiple furniture vendors and adaptation to changing construction and vendor schedules.
In the end, P2M relocated critical student-oriented service departments during peak service period with minimal disruption and vacated former Administration space all in a compressed time frame to accommodate conversion to student housing already committed for Fall semester. P2M successfully managed multiple sequenced moves required to meet changing departmental space needs.
